The first edition of the Pearl of Great Price was published by F. D. Richards in Liverpool, England in 1851. It was originally published and used as a missionary pamphlet but was received as a scripture standard. Also included in this publication are other revelations and the first publication of the Articles of Faith.
In addition, the revelation found in today's Doctrine and Covenants, Section 87, prophesying the Civil War and other wars along with the end of slavery on the American Continent and the world, first appeared in this publication. Some anti-Mormon publications claimed the revelation was bogus because it was revealed on December 25, 1832 and didn't appear in the Doctrine and Covenants until 1876. This 1851 publication refutes their claim and establishes the prophecy as being published nine years before the event in South Carolina that precipitated the Civil War.
Intact copies of the original publication, which includes the salmon-covered wrapper, are almost non-existent. The total surviving copies without the wrappers probably number under 100. Those existing with the wrappers are thought to be at ten or less. Most collectors are unaware that the book was originally with a wrapper cover since it is so rare.
This publication is in very good condition and is complete. The back paper has some tearing on the spine, but for a paper cover is still in amazingly good condition.
